Summer Bike Camps 2019- Important Information
Camp Arrival and Departure Procedures
When you and your child arrive each morning, you will sign in at the registration table. At pick up, your child may only be picked up by the adults listed on the Participant Emergency Form/Camper Google Form and Waiver. You will be asked to show ID. Do not drop your child off without first signing in. Please let us know at Drop Off and/or in writing if your child will be picked up early from camp that day. If you need to add additional adults to your authorized pick up list, you must do so in writing or in person, before that person is to pick up. Once your child is signed in, he or she will be directed to their designated “parking space” marked in chalk for storage of their backpack, bike and other items.
Bike & Equipment
First and foremost, all campers MUST wear a bike helmet. On the first day of camp, helmets will be inspected and properly fitted to each child. Campers will wear helmets at all times, with the exception of our snack/lunch/craft/non-bike games breaks. We will have spare Woom helmets available to borrow and purchase- we highly recommend this model.
All campers must supply their own bikes in good working order. We will conduct bike safety check on the first morning of camp, but please make sure your child’s bike is ready in advance- tires properly inflated, working brakes, clean and functional chain/chainring, and all extraneous accessories and distractions removed (bells, baskets, noisemakers).
If you have the tools to do so, please remove your child’s training wheels AND pedals before camp. We will not use or need training wheels. We will remove pedals for all campers to start. If you are able to do so at home, this will save us time on Monday morning. If not, please plan to arrive by 8:45 AM.
BIKE FIT! VERY IMPORTANT
Please be sure that your child’s bike seat can be adjusted low enough to allow for their foot to be flat on the ground, with a slight bend in the knee. (This is to allow us to start with balance exercises and gliding- not the proper seat height for pedaling). If your child’s bike does not allow this or is not in good working order, you will need to rent a bike. Bike rentals are $25, and first come, first served (reserved through registration form, confirmed via Waiver Form.) Woom rental bikes are lightweight and high quality, and make the learning process easier.
The more prepared the bikes are on Monday morning, the faster we can get started with learning and fun! Other than rental bikes, bikes and helmets will need to be taken home each night, as there is not secure storage for bikes. Kickstands are not required. If you are considering a new bike purchase for your child, please feel free to contact us for guidance but it's best to start this week using a rental or smaller/older bike and to purchase a new and larger bike once they’ve learned to ride.
Clothing & Sun Protection
It is imperative that your child be dressed appropriately for sun, heat and activity. Closed toe sneakers are a must and children will not be able to participate in flip flop, sandals, crocs or water shoes. Socks are strongly encouraged, taller socks protect shins and lower legs from scratchy pedals, a common issue with developing bike riders. Comfortable shorts or leggings and tee shirts are best- please no very oversized or loose clothing which can be a hazard. We recommend bike gloves ($15 through PedalPower Kids) for hand protection and comfort and sunglasses. Please label all clothing. Children should arrive at camp with sunscreen applied as we expect to be in direct sun throughout the program. Children can bring sunscreen to reapply themselves but parents must complete the sunscreen permission on the Waiver form. We encourage you to send both a lotion/spray and a facial stick to ease application for your child.
Food & Drink
For morning Learn to Ride campers, please send your child with a substantial snack/small lunch. Lunches should be peanut and tree nut-free and should not require refrigeration. No food sharing is permitted. Campers should plan to bring a large insulated water bottle with to stay hydrated throughout the day. Afternoon Adventure campers should also bring a substantial snack/lunch, and water they can carry.
All children must be toilet trained. We will have use of restrooms and hand sanitizer. If your child becomes ill at camp, you will be notified and must pick up immediately. Children are not allowed any medications without the proper documentation- contact us to discuss further- NO EXCEPTIONS- the form requires physician signature and a photo of your child. This includes over the counter medications- please do not put medications in backpacks or lunch boxes without proper documentation and notification to staff.
Other Important Rules
Please do not send any electronic devices, toys or valuables to camp with your child. We do not have the ability to securely store valuables. On the first morning of camp, campers will review
the safety rules for the particular location and camp, and are expected to adhere to these policies.
Camp will be held rain or shine, but thunderstorms will require cancellation. You will be called to pick up ASAP. In the event of dangerous and sudden weather, Camp will move indoors until parents can pick up.
