  • This week’s #WhyWednesday: “Why the Neon Camp Tshirts?”

“We saw your campers coming like a swarm of bees” If you spend time near the B&A Trail or in Tenleytown in the summer, chances are you’ve noticed our pack of bike riders in matching safety green PedalPower Kids tees. That color choice is not only fun and happy- but VERY intentional.

Safety Green is one of the most visible colors to the human eye, especially in daylight. For drivers, it stands out quickly against roads, sidewalks, and natural backgrounds, helping riders be seen sooner and more clearly. That extra visibility adds an important layer of safety.

We use this as an opportunity to teach riders and families a bigger lesson: being seen is just as important as being skilled.

That’s why we also emphasize:
- Wearing reflective or high-visibility clothing when riding
- Using bike lights, even during the day
- Considering small details like helmet lights to increase visibility from all angles

Building safe habits early helps riders feel more confident and prepared every time they get on their bike.

  • This week’s #WhyWednesday: “Why We Teach the ABC Quick Check”

Being a safe and responsible bike rider starts before you saddle up. Before every ride, we teach riders to check their bike and equipment for safety and readiness.

Bikes are tools for independence and freedom- and like any other vehicle, bikes need regular maintenance. Young riders feel empowered when they know how to recognize issues with their bike- and may even be able to fix them themselves!

A is for Air: making sure tires are properly inflated
B is for Brakes: making sure they engage and stop correctly
C is for Chain: making sure it is clean, lubricated, and moving smoothly- and if the bike has gears, it shifts cleanly between each one
Quick is for quick releases- making sure seat and wheels are secured.

We teach riders to do a “fit check” for safety as well: helmets fit properly on the forehead, the back dial snug, and straps forming a V under each ear and secure under the chin. Riders learn to check their shoelaces, loose clothing and backpack straps to make sure everything is snug and secure.

This quick routine builds ownership, awareness, and confidence so kids can focus on enjoying the ride. As weather warms, we encourage all families to do a thorough ABC Quick Check before heading out to ride- many bikes will need a good spring tune up! 🚲
