GETTING READY FOR YOUR PROGRAM

Everything you need to know before your child rides with PedalPower Kids.

It depends on the program your child is enrolled in:

Learn to Ride Classes & Camps
We provide high-quality, ultra-lightweight bikes from our partners at Woom Bikes and Guardian Bikes (hyper link both of these using our affiliate links (on the partner page). Each child will be fitted to the appropriate bike during their session.

Our goal is always to transition riders back to their own bike as their skills and confidence grow. We recommend bringing your child’s bike so we can advise on sizing, properly adjust it and help them practice between sessions.

*Some programs (including Learn to Ride camps at Kinder Farm Park) do not include use of a PedalPower Kids bike. Families will have the option to rent a bike from PedalPower Kids.

Adventure Camps & Bike Clubs
Riders must bring their own bike in good working condition. We strongly recommend bikes with handbrakes and gears for Bike Clubs and Adventure Camps. These programs involve longer rides and exploration, so it’s important that your child is comfortable on their own bike.

We do have a limited number of rental bikes available for specific programs —please inquire after registration if needed.

All riders should bring:

  • A properly fitting helmet (we have extra loaners if needed and we sell Woom helmets)
  • A water bottle

Learn to Ride Camps (half-day)

  • Snack or lunch
  • Backpack
  • Sunscreen / bug spray / medications (if needed)

Adventure Camps (half-day & full-day)

  • Bike in good working condition
  • Water bottle or hydration pack
  • Backpack (must be carried by the rider)
  • Snack (half-day) or lunch + snacks (full-day)
  • Sunscreen / bug spray / medications (if needed)

Learn to Ride Classes
No additional items needed.

Bike Clubs

  • Hydration pack (highly recommended!) or water bottle
  • Small snack

No—these are not necessary.

We focus on balance and control first, which minimizes falls. Pads often create more discomfort and distraction for new riders.

Proper clothing makes a big difference in comfort and success.

  • Closed-toe sneakers (laces tied securely)
  • Long socks or pants/leggings (to protect shins)
  • Avoid baggy clothing, skirts and dresses, long jackets (can get caught or cause discomfort

We also recommend bringing extra layers for changing weather- riders often remove or add layers during programs as activity levels change.

Learn to Ride Classes
Parents are welcome to stay, but we encourage giving instructors space to build rapport and confidence with each rider. A little distance goes a long way! Pets are not permitted on site per our lease agreements. Siblings may not bring bikes or scooters to use in any of our instructional areas.

Learn to Ride & Adventure Camps
We kindly ask that parents do not stay during camp and we utilize drop off lines at our camps for smooth transitions. This helps children stay engaged, build independence, and fully connect with the group experience.

Your child will be excited to show you everything they’ve learned at pickup!

Kids actually love riding in the rain—but safety always comes first.

If weather conditions are unsafe, we will cancel or adjust the session as needed. We have indoor options at many of our locations. We do not typically cancel in advance due to unpredictable Maryland weather.

Weather-related changes will be communicated via our Sawyer registration system emails. Please be sure to review.

Safety is our top priority.

  • Low-traffic, controlled learning environments
    • Certified instructors (First Aid & CPR)
    • Fully stocked first aid kits
    • High-visibility teaching setups
    • Properly maintained equipment

Families can help us maintain rigorous safety standards by adhering to our policies related to bikes, helmets, class locations, attendance, etc. While riding a bike involves inherent risk, there is much that can be done to lower that risk, from properly-fitted helmets to arriving on time for classes, to packing all recommended items for adventure camps.

PedalPower Kids also maintains appropriate liability insurance.
